Bingham fall away in 2nd half
By Chris Packer
Stamford College OB 36 – 9 Bingham
Bingham traveled away in the NLD Vase to Stamford College Old Boys who play 2 tiers higher in the RFU leagues buoyed by recent performances but came across atrocious weather and a bigger pack
Rain & wind made playing conditions difficult but Bingham controlled the 1st 5 minutes working way up the pitch from receiving the kick off and were awarded a penalty. A complete miss kick from the reliable Will Packer & SCOB get a foothold on 10 mins, a break blind by the scrum half and a couple of missed tackles allowed the 1st score but conversion missed in front of the posts proving it was not going to be an easy day for kicking
Bingham get back into game as Will Packer then slots a kick 5 – 3. A forward drive gains a penalty which Anthony Thomas puts to within 10m and a drive from the subsequent line out was held up and SCOB won the the resulting scrum and cleared.
A missed tackle on the SCOB flyhalf allowed a reasonably easy run in on 25 min; 12 – 3.
Pete Mount off with a slight niggle replaced by Richard Walters. Bingham continue to maintain possession without getting into clear scoring positions but 2 more penalties from Will Packer before half time gives a close game at 12 – 9
The 2nd half started with SCOB putting on pressure through the forwards eventually forcing a line out 5m out 15 mins in and peeled round to score 19 – 9
Will Packer, Nathan Hartland had to leave the field & Chris Heathcote on the injury come back trail also took a breather stretched resources and 2 further tries took the score to 26 – 9.
Despite this Bingham continued to take the game to SCOB running a couple of penalties but just could not make the telling break. Richard Walters made a couple of late breaks but again Bingham just failed to keep the ball alive and momentum going.
The game ended with a final Score from SCOB as a wheeled scrum created an extra man and the defence was unable to scramble quickley enough. FT 36 – 9
A disappointing 2nd half but needs to be reviewed in the context of playing a side 2 leagues higher and Bingham matching the opposition in terms of possession.
