A warm welcome to Ricardo Bartley who turned up to support the boys and show his face after a few years away. Ricardo even turned up to train this evening and we hope to see him turn out again very soon.
We also welcomed Kieran Gagg making his debut after training with us for a while and overcoming injury.
Appalling conditions with strong wind and rain greeted as expected, a tough game against a young, quick and fit side with Derby Medics recently putting 100+ points on Ripley 2nds. As has been our want of late we gave the opposition a head start, this time within almost 30 seconds from kick off, Derby playing with the wind cleared from which Bingham fumbled, Derby hacked on and touched down under the posts. With such a start we could have expected heads to go down but no Bingham buckled down putting pressure on the scrum but with both the medics fly half and centre having big kicks were able to clear when attacks were halted. A few back row breaks from Bingham but Defences were on top and the half ended 0 – 7
With the elements now with Bingham, most of the play was in the medics half and the line was threatened more regularly but again defences held firm and the conditions did not help with free flowing rugby. With 15 mins to go, a high tackle allowed Bingham to run a quick penalty with the ball finding its way to Anthony Thomas to score in the corner. With the conversion pulled wide, Bingham chased the game with the score at 5 – 7 and only minutes left. On the final play, an attempted drop goal was missed and the game slipped away
Positives gained from a spirited performance and a performance had we put in the previous week would undoubtedly generated an easy win and far more points
