Bingham overcome the weather and high flying Moderns

Match Report
Bingham Vs Notts Moderns 3rds
KO 3pm

Bingham playing with the wind behind them kicked off against a Moderns side who knew a win could take them top of the Pennant. With a late change at scrum half, Coach Huw Thomas put on his boots to fill the void. The first few minutes passed with little incident until a Moderns player pulled down a ruck, was penalised and Mick Challons slotted over from 30 yards for a 3-0 start.
Some decent back play with Jens Harris and Chris Garrod up the middle and some good pick and drives saw Bingham quietly gain territory but it was countered by some speedy back play over the next five minutes with the quick outside centre and full back for Moderns showing the pace they had showed in the reverse fixture earlier in the season.
On the 16th Minute and despite a previous warning, Huw Thomas was called over for infringement at the ruck. It provided some laughter on the touchline seeing our illustrious leader walk slowly over like a naughty school boy with his bottom lip curled up. Fortunately a talking too was all it was.
A few minutes later, a powerful Moderns side took it up the middle tying up Bingham centre’s and forwards and cleverly took it out wide with a 3 to1 overlap and the 2nd Row score in the corner. Conversion missed - 3-5.
Rain started to pour but Anthony Thomas quickly took the game to Moderns winning a turnover at a lineout and breaking at pace on his own, kicking towards the try line just being beaten by the covering winger. However, just a couple of minutes later, with Bingham taking control of the game and Moderns losing their discipline and giving away territory, Huw Thomas brought back the years with a fake to go open only to go blind play from the ruck, duck under a tackle and go over to rapturous applause. A great kick by Mick Challons from out wide & Bingham deservedly led 10-5.
With Rain now horizontal and Kronenbourg and John Smiths Brollies keeping the patient fans dry, Jens Harris at Outside Centre pulled his hamstring causing Ian Taylor to come on at wing and Paul Foster move from full back alongside Chris Garrod. Another injury with Chris Bell and his neck and Dave Fairchild joined the piece in the front row. Half time drew as Moderns missed a difficult penalty from out wide and on came the oranges for both sides. Half Time 10- 5.
The second half began and Bingham with a tight lead knew Moderns with the wind in their sails would come back for vengeance. However Captain Jason Churchill led by example with a 30 yard run through tackles left and right setting the tone for the home side. Ten minutes passed with little incident with Bingham cleverly using the elements to their advantage and ensuring Moderns couldn’t use their dangerous backs. With a penalty given against Moderns a deep Paul Foster kick saw Bingham catch and drive through Jonathan JT Thomas from outside the Moderns 22. With dad barking Drive Drive and the forwards showing great power they drove at the line and with most touching the ball at some point with the last pass from Dan Bartram to Anthony Thomas who fell over the line for an excellent try. Conversion missed.15-5.
Moderns became frustrated with one of their players getting a yellow for stamping. However, a few minutes later they created an overlap out wide but Will North made an excellent saving tackle. Unfortunately, Will just moments later, saw a yellow himself for holding and with Moderns back to full strength, we needed to hold out for the last 7 minutes.
Straightaway, Moderns saw space & kicked over the top however they didn’t realise our prop Dave Fairchild can run as fast as Usain Bolt and he outpaced the Moderns Back to save a try on the line.
A Moderns try on the final play couldn’t dampen the Bingham spirits (although the weather did) and a Full Time 15-10 win was one of our best results of the season.
A game the Thomas family played a large part in and Chris Spibey again turning in another spirited performance. The win sees us move above Ilkeston to a season high of 6th place. Wonderbar!
