Bingham’s first home game of the season produced a 5 try bonus point win over Moderns ll with debutant tries for 2 of our new players, Pete Coppack & James Seagrave
Pete Coppack started the scoring as Bingham recovered the kick off, recycled the ball a couple of times before passing wide to Pete Coppack in the corner
Whilst an excellent start, probably gave Bingham a false sense of security as the next 10/15 minutes saw the home team rush and try to force plays that were not on and conceded a penalty to allow Moderns to get the score back to 5 – 3
By the start of the 2nd quarter, Bingham began to manage play better with Will Packer slotting a penalty and Ben Jones showing some exciting breaks with Jonathan Thomas in support. Jonathan Thomas then stole a line out on the Moderns 22 and drove to within cm of the line before being halted and from the subsequent forward drive, Lee Fretwell the artful poacher gained possession and went over. Will Packer added the conversion.
Just before half time, Ben Jones makes another telling break from a lineout just inside the Bingham half and immediately offloaded to Will Packer who brushed off defenders in a charging run using Chris Bell who maintained support as a decoy and Will fell over the line.
Half time 20 – 3
Early in the 2nd half, a wake up call as Moderns pushed forward and after Bingham conceded ground with a penalty, Moderns won the line out, ran phases and found the gap through the middle 20- 10
A number of penalties conceded again by Bingham before Will Packer calmed matters with a penalty. 23 – 10
Some excellent defence and tough tackling in the backs particularly seen from Harry Bowles, Pete Coppack and Ben Sansom before he left the field. New players Adam Deal & James Seagrave always posed a threat with some great runs before pressure tackling forced a loose ball and James Seagrave kicked on, recovered and scored his debut try
Good to have Pete Mount back playing as the forwards played their part with better line out possession provided by Richard Walters & Jack Barnard than previous weeks and a reasonably solid scrum performance. Oscar Ciaurro was all over the pitch with Ben Packer hitting anything which moved.
Gareth McGahan put in a solid performance whilst carrying a bit of niggle before being replaced by Vet Dave Fairchild. Chris Heathcote played the last 20 after injury & new boys Nathan Hartland & Steve Guiton also got on to play their part.
The final score came from a recovered kick with Jack Barnard making the telling break before offloading to Matt Forde in support and Will Packer added the conversion.
Full time 35 – 10
An excellent home win after 2 opening defeats and great to see both teams enjoying the game and after match. Excellent support on the touch line and tremendous to see a good number of our mini rugby lads and parents along supporting
Thanks all
