A Great victory over high flying Mansfield 3rds

Bingham v Mansfield 3rds

After a disappointing few weeks with no games and availability problems, we welcomed back Kieran Gagg, saw Anthony Thomas have his 1st run out after injury sustained against Derby Vets back in May and had the luxury of a full bench of replacements and able to make use of new rolling sub rule.

Glorious sunshine and some great interplay straight from the off had Bingham pressing in the Mansfield 22. A solid scrum but Tom Packer stumbles as he picks from the scrum but is able to keep going and manages to get over and convert 7 – 0 after 3mins. Confidence grows as Glen Sutton and Will North run back kicks with quick recycling threatens to break through for a 2nd try but scrum conceded. Ball won against the head and Tom Packer goes blind to feed Will North with several defenders bearing down but drives over to go 12 – 0. Mansfield forwards begin to get working together and drive to within 5m but a battling Dave Fairchild steals the ball and is cleared. Glen Sutton having a blinder counter attacking whenever he can and linking with Tom Spibey & Neil Ellis and then again Chris Spibey & Andrew Birznieks led to 5m scrum. On the 2nd scrum, Jon Thomas picks and feeds Tom Packer to score and convert to go 19 – 0 after 27 mins.

A good contest with Mansfield making some good breaks and competing in the forwards and from a scrum 35 m out, the No8 picks up and leaves the Bingham defence flat footed and with 2 on 1 feeds his support to take Glen Sutton out of the game 19 – 5

A spate of missed tackles began to let Mansfield back into the game as Half time came.

Using rolling subs allowed game time for Ian Taylor, Gareth McGahan & Anthony Thomas. As the 2nd half began, the 1st 10 minutes a bit tense as Bingham fought to get back on top and eventually a break by Kieran Gagg, feeding to Anthony Thomas and onto Mick Challans in support to score. Converted by Tom Packer 26 – 5. Bingham Line outs were not functioning well and Ian Taylor breaks out of defence and makes 30m but Mansfield fight back with some forward drives. Pressure eventually told as a quickly ran penalty broke through for Mansfield to score under the posts and convert to bring back to 26 – 12.

Bingham use all their subs and sees Mark Brenton intercept who sought support from Tom Spibey as he was closed down and as the pressure builds on the Mansfield line, possession is retained and recycled eventually finding the way to Kieran Gagg to go over in the corner. Converted by Tom Packer from the touchline 33 – 12 and effectively closes out the game.

A great result over a Mansfield team who had only lost 1 of 6 games so far this season; some excellent periods and still a lot to work on

Full time 33 – 12
