A good win against Derby 3rds but no bonus point

Saturday saw us entertain Derby 3rds and for a change not many changes just 3 with Lee Stokoe, Glenn Sutton and Kieran Gagg in the starting XV.
Bingham played the 1st half into the wind and started very slowly indeed, with some poor kicking and sloppy tackling allowing Derby to dictate the game and kept Bingham pinned in their own half for the 1st 20 minutes.
Derby missed a penalty kick in front of the post but their outside half soon made amends when given another opportunity, 3 - 0 Derby.
Anthony Thomas was replaced by Mick Challans after a clash of heads and Bingham were still struggling to stamp their authority on the game. The scrummaging from the Bingham pack was powerful which kept them in the game and from a scrum on the Derby 10 yard line Jonathan Thomas picked up and went blind and sprinted clear to score. Tom Packer converted 7 - 3.
Derby kept plugging away but Bingham's defence held strong with some resolute tackling however Just on the stroke of half time the Derby 9 broke the defence and seemed destined to score but Glenn Sutton appeared from nowhere and dragged the 9 down in the corner inches from the try line which allows Bingham to clear.
With the wind in their favour Bingham again started nervously however but with the supremacy at the scrum, Bingham started to put a stranglehold on the game. The defence again was solid and the only opportunity for Derby was to run from their own line with little success.
Once again it was left to Glenn Sutton to raise the bar; he collected a difficult bouncing rolling ball off his toes and immediately counter attacked, beat a couple of defenders and chipped ahead and gave chase, Derby recovered but panicked and with Bingham pressurising the line a missed kick allowed Ben McGill to pounce and score, the conversion hit the post 12 - 3.
Territorially Bingham dominated the remainder of the game and from a switch in midfield Andrew Birznieks broke through and scored near the post which left Tom Packer with the easiest of conversions.
Bingham then rung the changes with substitutes Lee Fretwell, Jim Cooper and Joe Illston entering the fray. Despite dominating the final 20 minutes we were unable to score another try and obtain the bonus point. A case of not letting the ball do the work and poor Chris Garrod was left on several occasions just needing a pass to stroll over but the pass never came.
All in all a good performance a home win with still room for improvement scrummaging was excellent but line out and ruck needs attention as well as 1st time tackling.
Final score 19 - 3.
