Gainsborough 17 - Bingham 24

Bingham battled back for a hard-fought league win over Gainsborough having trailed by ten points.

A number of players unavailable, Ali Wood making a welcome return, Glenn Sutton starting on the flank, Mick Challans and Lee Fretwell once again plugging gaps in the pack and 3 injuries sustained made this win all the more pleasing after making a torrid start conceding a penalty and converted try in the opening 30 minutes.

Bingham really struggled to get going playing into the wind and sun with a late kick off after getting locked out of the changing room.

Oli Dodge proved a real positive collecting all the high balls Gainsborough threw at him but not until 35 minutes did Bingham put any sustained pressure on the Gainsborough line and manage to protect the ball in contact. With 2 minutes to half time, Gainsborough conceded a series of penaltes resulting in a yellow card and captain Jonathan Thomas managed to force over from a quick penalty; converted by Andy Price.

Prior to this pressure, Bingham had managed to hold out with Ben Packer making a couple of critical tackles one of which saw him in a crunching collision taking all the wind out of him. Crucially during that phase of play, Bingham lost Will Packer with a twisted knee and required a number of positional changes in the backs.

Despite this, Bingham turned round at half time only 10 - 7 down.

The 2nd half did not start as we wanted with a fumble on the kick off but having won the ball back and winning a free kick on half way, Jonathan Thomas took Gainsborough napping attacking straight down the middle and after several phases of possession, the ball was recycled in front of the posts and Mick Challans took the opportunity to get Bingham in the lead and a real sense of a turnaround was evident. Andy Price added the conversion and 10 minutes later a penalty to make it 10 - 17 in Binghams favour.

Lee Fretwell then collected 2 restarts and released the ball rather than taking into contact and set the tone for the next 30 mins with Bingham showing much more go forward and despite a big Gainsborough pack keeping pressure on the set piece restricting quick ball, overall mobility throughout the team seemed to swing the balance to Bingham and a planned lineout worked a dream with Ali Wood running in from 20m; Andy Price again adding the extras.

Andy Price then suffered a bad cut to the head which subsequently required 9 stitches just above the eye, Ben Packer struggled along after another hard tackle and Chris Garrod had to leave the pitch with a shoulder injury.

Gainsborough were given a sniff as a number of penalties were conceded, giving their forwards the position to keep hold of the ball and drive over.

Bingham managed the last 5 minutes well restricting any opportunity and gained a hard fought win but a lot still to work on.
