Brave Bingham Dig Deep for Gritty Away Win

Brave Bingham Dig Deep for Gritty Away Win

Chris Packer1 Mar - 18:30

A Fifteen-man effort, tired legs, and late drama seal a statement victory

Bingham RUFC made the long trip to face third-placed Grimsby RUFC with just 15 players after late but understandable dropouts, forcing Thommo and Tom Green into the backs. On a heavy pitch, a tough afternoon looked inevitable.

However, a flying start saw Kyle Howie break tackles, chip past the last defender, and win the foot race to open the scoring, converted by Will Packer. Scores were traded in a tight first half, with Bingham edging ahead 19–22 at the break despite a missed try opportunity right on half-time.

Huge shifts were put in by the front five of Ewan, Ethan, Steve, Gareth and Richard, while the back row of Kyle, Hamish, and Joe made decisive breaks and proved just too quick for the home side.

During the second half, Bingham continued to edge proceedings while keeping control. The backs made some excellent cover tackles and, in attack, worked the Grimsby defence hard. Tom Szolin was impeccable under the high ball, launching several counter-attacks, while Ben and Will kept the forwards moving forwards. George and Thommo distributed well in the centres, with Ryan and Tom Green both making powerful runs on the wings.

With 10 minutes left, Bingham led 29–37. To their credit, Grimsby kept pushing and a converted try made it 36–37 with just minutes remaining, setting up a nervy finish. Digging deep, Bingham kept Grimsby pinned in their own 22. After forcing the hosts to run from their own line, an error was created, allowing Kyle Howie to strike again under the posts and seal the win. Will Packer took his time over the conversion before the final whistle sounded: 36–44.

Tries came from Kyle Howie (2), Ethan Porter (2), Ryan Carr, Thommo, and Will Packer. Not the easiest day from the tee for Will, but he added a penalty and three conversions. Exhausted players, committed supporters, and a long journey home but all smiling as Bingham completed the double over their opponents.
