After a disappointing start to the season in terms of results and marred by string of injuries Bingham secured their first win of the season with a confident display against Nottinghamians.

With several positional changes and 3 players making their debuts Bingham began with a forceful start driving through the phases eventually seeing Andrew Gill picking up on the blindside to drive over in the 7th minute. Anthony Thomas struck a fine conversion.

Bingham were then guilty of kicking away useful possession allowing the opposition to mount a useful attack through their main strength in the backs who eventually created a well worked try on the blindside with Bingham light on defensive numbers. The try was converted and the game settled into a bitty contest, constantly interrupted by stoppages for injury. Bingham’s scrummage was again operating strongly as was the their driving mauls led superbly by the tenacious play of Andy Watts and Captain Jonathan Thomas.

With the game approaching half time a period of Bingham pressure in the opposition 22 saw the ball arriving at Nick Green, in a move orchestrated by fly half Simon Ward. The
athletic centre jinked and sidestepped his way past 3 defenders to touch down under the posts and Anthony Thomas kicked 2 more points.

The second half began brightly for Bingham who camped in their opponents 22 forcing a number of scrums and lineouts. Attacks were again being well controlled by fly half Ward who was making excellent use of the fine penetrative runs by centre Bruce Watson
Although the lineout was once again not operating smoothly, a JT pick up at the back of another successful scrum saw him with space down the blindside and his forceful run allowed him to beat 2 opponents on the outside and step inside the fullback to run round for an excellent try. Once again his brother Anthony showed his restored kicking confidence by slotting an excellent conversion.

At 21 – 7 up Bingham should have run away with the game. However once again the game’s flow was marred by stoppages and Nottinghmaians were not prepared to go down softly. They counter attacked once again by spreading the ball wide to the wing. The first attempt was snuffed out by a superb try saving tackle by debutant Matt Isherwood at fullback, but the second saw an overlap created and the left wing running in from 55 meters to under the posts for a converted try.

With the game stuttering to its end, a number of driving attacks saw JT break through again pop the ball up in the tackle, to find the evergreen Chris Bell in support who shrugged off one opponent and carried 2 others over the line with him for a fine forwards try. This conversion was narrowly missed and Bingham ran out to secure a bonus point win and 4th place in the early League standings.
